Councillors welcome reopening of Tay Street in milestone for the ‘super sewer’ project

Perth City Centre councillors have welcomed the news that - after two years of closure - Tay Street should fully reopen later this month.

Since June 2023, Scottish Water has been installing a “super sewer” deep underground at Tay Street and Shore Road as part of a £107 million project to improve Perth's wastewater infrastructure.

Perth and Kinross Council this week announced it expects Tay Street to completely open to traffic on Friday, June 20.

A mammoth 2.2m wide steel-reinforced composite pipe has been getting fitted along a 470m stretch of road on Tay Street and Shore Road alongside the existing 1.8m diameter sewer.

The aim is to provide significant additional capacity and “futureproof” Perth.

Scottish Water has previously said the super sewer “will play a key role in supporting the city's continuing growth, while also reducing the risk of sewer flooding affecting lowlying areas between Muirton and the city centre” (down to Marshall Place).

Scottish Water has now completed the installation of the super sewer and carriageway resurfacing work is under way between the railway bridge on Tay Street and The Ice Factory on Shore Road.

Perth and Kinross Council expects the work - which will be done over three phases - to be completed by June 20.

A council spokesperson said: “We expect the resurfacing work to take three weeks to complete with the road fully reopening to traffic on June 20.

“Road closures will remain in place until Monday, June 16 when temporary traffic lights will be used to control traffic.

“Phase One will restore the carriageway between the rail bridge to the north entrance of the South Inch car park.
