Labour's new Barrhead councillor said her by-election victory shows the community "rejects the politics of fear and division".

Julie Ann Costello McHale has been elected as the new representative for the Barrhead, Liboside and Uplawmoor ward on East Renfrewshire Council.
Her win means Labour holds on to a seat which had been vacated as a result of the death of long-serving Cllr Betty Cunningham.
Cllr Costello McHale picked up the most first preference votes (1,901), ahead of the SNP’s David McDonald (1,142) and Reform’s Andy MacGibbon (1,018).
The Greens (247) were ahead of the Conservatives (207). There was a 29.9 per cent turnout, of a total electorate of 15,311.
In her victory speech, the new councillor said: "I see myself as just a lassie from Barrhead. I come from workers, tenacious people who take care of family, friends and neighbours, who stick up for those who are struggling and who always lead with kindness, compassion and respect.
"Growing up in a working class family and place has given me all the tools and values to equip me with making a meaningful contribution to our community."
The Barrhead mum added: "Today's result sends a strong message, the residents of this community reject division.
"We reject the politics of fear and division that we have sadly seen some try to bring into this town.
"They thrive on anger and blame, we instead will stand for unity, respect and progress.
