Key energy advice when moving house

I am moving house shortly and want to make sure that I get things right with my energy supply. Previously I had big problems when I was left with energy debt after moving property.

One of the situations clients often find themselves in is where they have moved house and have not taken readings for their electric and gas meters. This can result in people paying for energy debt that is not theirs or for energy they have not used.

Informing your energy supplier should be done 48 hours before leaving and moving into your new home, and has to be done whether you are on a credit meter or smart meter, but is particularly important for pre-payment meters.

If someone moves into a property with a pre-payment meter you must try not to use the key or card left by the previous tenant as they could have debt left on the meter and the key/card could be taking off debt every time it is used to top up by the new tenant.
