Tribal family ostracised for not serving liquor at post-death rituals of kin

A tribal man and his family members in Mayurbhanj district have faced an inhumane social ostracisation by the villagers reportedly for not serving 'handia' (a traditional rice beer) during the post-death rituals of his late father.

Sangram Soren from Keshpal village under Sarat police station limits in Mayurbhanj district had earlier lodged a written complaint over the social boycott he and his family face. However, no action has been taken so far against the perpetrators despite passage of several days.

The family is now effectively isolated in their own village, and Sangram has alleged that they were even threatened with death if they defy the restrictions imposed upon them.
