Seven elephants, three adults and four calves, were killed after a herd was mowed down by the Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express in Assam’s Hojai district Saturday, once again highlighting the deadly risks at the intersection of rail-ways and wildlife habitats. At least 79 elephants have been reported killed in train collisions across India in the last five years, according to data provided by the Environment Ministry to the Lok Sabha. Assam accounts for the most train-related elephant deaths in the country, followed by West Bengal and Odisha.

Seven elephants were killed, and one was injured after a herd of jumbos was hit by the Sairang-New Delhi Rajdhani Express in Assam’s Hojai district early Saturday, officials said. Five coaches and the train’s engine also derailed, they said.
