Gujarat’s suicide crisis deepens

Over 13,000 student suicides were reported across India in 2022, with Gujarat accounting for more than 800, mostly among those aged 15 to 25

A case of suspected mass suicide in Gujarat’s Sabarkantha district has brought renewed attention to the growing mental health and social crisis unfolding quietly across the state.

A family of five from Vadali town allegedly consumed poison April 12. The parents, 42-year-old Vinu Sagar and 40-year-old Kokilaben, died, while their three teenage children—aged 17 to 19—are being treated at Himmatnagar civil hospital. Neighbours reported that all five began vomiting early Saturday morning. Though no suicide note was found, police are investigating possible psychological or financial stress as the trigger.
