BJD and the riddle of regional politics

Biju Janata Dal (BJD) that has dominated Odisha’s political landscape for the past two and half decades is facing an existential crisis.
The immediate trigger is the split vote in the Rajya Sabha on the Waaf Bill. Out of a total number of seven BJD parliamentarians, three voted for, another three voted against and one member chose to abstain. This was a political muddle, if there ever was one and clearly indicates more than a leadership failure.
While the buck for this fiasco definitely lands squarely on its supreme leader, Naveen Patnaik, what is of greater interest is whether the BJD ever had a plan B to survive any comprehensive political rout.
