‘You need to unlearn the Highway Code when you drive through this area’

DOUBLE-PARKED cars, drivers pulling out of junctions without a care in the world and blatantly dangerous overtaking are just the start of the long list of driving infractions I've seen in my seven years of driving through one of Nottingham’s most congested areas.

I grew up next to Hyson Green and it was always famed for its difficulty in travelling through by car, yet I never really appreciated how much of a detriment it would be to my daily life until I started driving myself.

Now, with a few years under my belt as a motorist and some experience driving through the UK's busiest cities, I can conclude that Hyson Green takes the top spot for some of the wildest and most infuriating places to drive.

While Nottingham City Council is trying to improve traffic flow, it does seem that this is merely a drop in the ocean of changes that need to be made before significant improvement is noticeable.

For example, the council has dropped the speed limit on Gregory Boulevard. Between 2015 and 2022, there were 271 crashes on the road, two of which led to deaths, with a further 24 reports of serious injuries.
