We won't let them win, say villagers as memorial is vandalised

TRIBUTE TO WAR DEAD WRECKED

- By GEORGE PALMER-SOADY

RESIDENTS of a Nottinghamshire village say “we aren't going to let them win” after a war memorial was targeted by vandals - leaving veterans “in tears”.

Villagers in Bilsthorpe say they are distraught after they found the display in Eakring Road destroyed on Wednesday morning, with wooden statues of soldiers snapped in half and poppies kicked over.

A framed photo of a local veteran placed by the statue was also damaged during the incident, which police are now investigating.

Among the heartbroken residents, many veterans were forced to learn of the memorial's vandalism while on their way to a monthly breakfast club at the nearby village hall.

Glenys and Arthur Pinnock built the memorial six years ago and have since maintained and funded it by themselves.
