We need a new, accurate map - this time for Africa!

The Correct the Map campaign, backed by the African Union and the Caribbean Community, has called for the wider adoption of the Equal Earth projection as an alternative to the Mercator projection

The African Union is backing the campaign. It’s deputy chairman, Selma Malika Haddadi, says: “It might seem to be just a map, but in reality, it is not.”

She says the standardised map has fostered the false belief that Africa is “marginal” and could be tucked into Russia. Yet it’s the second-largest continent by area, with 55 states and more than a billion people. Campaigners claim this distortion entrenches stereotypes in the media, policy-making and education.
