Striking spire given cash lifeline for urgent repairs

A CHURCH has been given a financial “lifeline” to carry out urgent repairs on an unusual concrete tower.

The Church of the Good Shepherd on Thackeray's Lane in Woodthorpe is currently on Historic England’s Heritage at Risk Register due to its crumbling grey spire.

The modern Grade II*-listed building has now been awarded a £25,000 grant from the National Churches Trust and a further £10,000 from the Wolfson Foundation charity. The grants will be used to replace defective concrete and carry out replastering and repairs at the Roman Catholic church.

There will also be other repairs to help combat damp, the National Churches Trust said.
