Small victory for campaigners in new homes battle

RUSHCLIFFE Borough Council has agreed to hold off on approving a masterplan for a 4,000-home development after pressure from campaigners.

At a council meeting on Tuesday, cabinet members were set to decide on whether to accept a supplementary planning document (SPD) from developers, which lays out an overall framework for the multistage construction of the huge new estate near Tollerton and Gamston.

But while officers had recommended the papers be approved, cabinet member for planning and housing, Councillor Roger Upton (Con), announced the decision would be paused so more detailed information could be sought about how the proposed development could affect roads, “especially the connectivity of the site to and across the A52”.

Members of the Save Nottingham Airfield group, which opposes the development in its entirety, protested outside the meeting before packing the public seating area in Rushcliffe Arena for the duration of the 23-minute discussion.
