HISTORIC CINEMA IN LENTON HAS EVEN APPEARED IN A MOVIE

- By LYNETTE PINCHESS

NINETY years of movie magic and momentous occasions are being celebrated by Nottingham’s Savoy cinema.

Since opening on November 7, 1935, the Savoy has delivered unforgettable movie experiences, blending its vintage charm and history with modern comforts.

Originally established as the Lenton Picture House Company, the Savoy stands as the only surviving pre-Second World War cinema in Nottingham.

Its distinctive appearance, built in the Art Deco style with a curved frontage, makes it an easily recognisable spot in Derby Road.

The cinema first opened with a screening of Flirtation Walk, starring Dick Powell and Ruby Keeler, and quickly became a local favourite, praised by the Nottingham Guardian for its appealing design.

Until the 1960s, the cinema offered a twice-weekly programme, and locals could enjoy a film for just one shilling.

Throughout the decades, the Savoy Cinema has adapted to technological advancements and evolving audience preferences.

The remaining months of this year are jam-packed with blockbuster releases. One of the most anticipated is Wicked: For Good, out on November 20 and now available to pre-book, followed by Disney's Zootropolis 2, which hits the big screen on November 28.

As December arrives, film fans can look forward to experiencing Avatar 3 or indulging in the festive offerings from the cinema's Christmas event lineup. More details can be found on the Savoy website.
