PRISONER HANDED NINE-YEAR SENTENCE AFTER SPARKING BLAZE WITH KETTLE PLUG

- By MARTIN NAYLOR

Inmate set fire to his own cell because he wasn't allowed to go to his brother's funeral

A NOTTINGHAM Prison inmate was pulled unconscious from his cell after he deliberately set it alight.

After the blaze, set by Kieran Welsh, broke out, the air ambulance and three fire engines had to be sent to the Perry Road jail.

The 25-year-old started the fire because he was unhappy at being sent there.

Now he has been handed a nine-year sentence, five of which will be immediate custody, for his criminal actions.

Denny Lau, prosecuting, said the incident happened at HMP Nottingham on February 24. He said: "The defendant is a 25-year-old male who appears to have developed a grudge against staff at HMP Nottingham, and when he was imprisoned there in February 2025, he set a fire in his cell within days.
