Bread and Lard Island? It's more like Sourdough and Latte Island!

LYNETTE PINCHESS takes a tour of the food and drink destinations that have contributed to West Bridgford being named the best place to live in Nottinghamshire

IT comes as no surprise that West Bridgford has been voted the best place to live in Nottinghamshire.

The suburb topped the county list in Muddy Stiletto’s nationwide poll to find the most desirable towns and villages to reside.

Attractive houses with gardens, an easy commute into city centre, good schools and a sense of community are some of its finest attributes.

Home to the world-famous Trent Bridge Cricket Ground and Nottingham Forest, with the National Water-sports Centre nearby, there's plenty to entertain sports lovers.

It’s also a hotspot for food and drink and shopping, which piques my interest.

Once it was nicknamed ‘Bread and Lard Island’ as it was said residents spent most of their money on big houses and fur coats.

Now it’s more like ‘Sourdough and Latte’ Island.

The leafy suburb beat the likes of Beeston, Southwell, Farndon, The Park and Wollaton in the poll.

I loved West Bridgford during the three years I lived there.

That was a long, long time ago when I was a student sharing a house in Chaworth Road, yet all these years later, it still has a special place in my heart.

Sadly, these days I can only aspire to live there as the high-ceilinged Victorian houses with sash windows, like the one I used to rent with five friends, are way out of my price range at around £700,000.

But I still visit regularly to eat out, shop and catch up with friends.
