May Fair unites community for day of festivities

HUNDREDS of visitors packed into Northam town centre for the return of the town’s annual May Fair, bringing together families, schools and entertainers for a day of traditional festivities.

The community celebration, organised by the town council with help from local churches, kicked off with a lively parade led by the Bideford Youth Pipe Band. The procession weaved its way through the fairground route before arriving at the main events arena in the Rectory Gardens.

Northam mayor, Councillor Tait, officially opened the event on May 3 by crowning the May King and Queen, chosen from reception pupils at St George's Infants School. Children from year two followed with a colourful performance of traditional Maypole dancing to the delight of the crowd.
