Do not underestimate role libraries play, warns MP

PUBLIC libraries across North Devon are under growing threat as councils grapple with mounting budget pressures, a local MP has warned - despite the essential role they play in education, wellbeing and social cohesion.

Ian Roome, Liberal Democrat MP for North Devon and a former council leader, said libraries are being forced to do "far more with far less" as local authorities face impossible financial decisions.

In a passionate speech in Parliament, Mr Roome described libraries as "lifelines", particularly for children, the elderly and those living in poverty or isolation.

"Libraries support lifelong learning and social cohesion," he said. "Yet they are being asked to do ever more as other services retreat - all while facing cuts themselves."

Citing BBC research, Mr Roome noted that at least 190 libraries have closed in the UK over the past five years. He also pointed to the UK's poor record on teenage literacy among developed nations, arguing that closures risk worsening already worrying trends in educational attainment.
