HC quashes I-T order citing use of flawed AI-generated case law

The Bombay High Court has quashed an income tax (IT) assessment ruling, flagging the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the order and noting that the assessing officer had relied on nonexistent, AI-generated case laws to justify additions to a company’s declared income.
The Bombay High Court has cautioned tax authorities against blindly relying on AI-generated information.

A bench of Justices B.P. Colabawalla and Amit Jamsandekar observed that in the era of artificial intelligence, quasi-judicial authorities, in particular, must exercise caution and not blindly rely on AI-generated information, but instead cross-verify such material before using it in official proceedings.
