The US will extend tariff exemptions to companies that commit to manufacturing in America, President Donald Trump said during a White House function with Apple chief executive Tim Cook on Wednesday, a decision that could bring major reprieve for India.

Cook announced Apple will invest an additional $100 billion in US sourcing and manufacturing, bringing the company's total commitment to $600 billion and qualifying it among firms that Trump said "will have no charge."

"We're going to be putting a very large tariff on chips and semiconductors, but the good news for companies like Apple is, if you're building in the United States, or have committed to build, without question, committed to build in the United States, there will be no charge," Trump told reporters.
