Top-up health plans offer high coverage at low cost, protecting against major medical events

Just ₹6,818 helped me raise our family health cover from ₹20 lakh to ₹5 crore with a top-up policy. We're in our mid-50s with two kids in their 20s. Few financial products let you boost protection 25x for the cost of a meal out. That's why I often recommend top-up (or super top-up) insurance—base cover handles first losses, top-ups handle catastrophic ones.

The questions I am asked are: Why is top-up so cheap? How does one claim? Are there regulatory safeguards, or exclusions? How should one buy a top-up? Here are the answers. The top-up plans that I refer to in this column are those where the deductible applies to total annual claims, not per hospitalization.
