India top sender of international students to US this year, China no. 2

India has overtaken China as the leading source of international students in the United States for the first time in 15 years, with over 3.3 lakh students currently studying in the country. According to the 2024 Open Doors Report, the number of Indian students in the US for the academic year 2023-24 has reached an all-time high of 3,31,602, marking a 23 per cent increase from the previous year. This surge represents a significant shift in the global student mobility landscape, as India now accounts for 29 per cent of the total international student population in the United States.

For the past decade and a half, China had maintained its position as the leading country of origin for international students in the US. However, India's rapid rise in numbers has propelled it to the top spot for the first time since the 2008/2009 academic year.

The new figures have been celebrated as a sign of growing educational ties between the two countries.
