Uttarakhand has taken a significant step by implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

It has become the second state in India after Goa to adopt a uniform legal framework for all its citizens. The UCC, which came into effect on January 27, 2025 in the state, has a stated aim of ushering in uniformity in laws related to marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, and live-in relationships, among other things. This move has been touted by the ruling party's leaders as a milestone in the path of ensuring gender equality and social harmony across communities.
