The Department of Agriculture is seeking to impose a P50-per-kilo price ceiling on imported rice as supply chain disruptions linked to Middle East instability drive domestic costs to record highs.

- By DEXTER BARRO II

Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said Monday, March 16, that he has proposed that the executive branch implement a hard limit to curb price spikes for imported milled rice, which is currently retailing for as much as P65 per kilo in some regions.

Tiu Laurel characterized prices exceeding P50 per kilo as profiteering under current market conditions.
