Filipino author Johannes Chua’s journey into dark fiction with debut book ‘Kuwentong Butsero’

For Johannes Chua, writing felt instinctive—natural, even. Although he grew up in a Fil-Chi family that viewed a career in writing and media as unconventional, he believed in the idea “ars longa, vita brevis” (art is long, life is short).
He earned a degree in Economics from De La Salle University (DLSU), where he also pursued a Master’s in Creative Writing and became part of its literary journal, Malate. Johannes eventually became one of the most decorated writers and editors in the local media landscape. After 25 years as a media practitioner, he is now pursuing a lifelong dream—to publish a book.
Last March, Johannes unveiled his debut book, “Kwentong Butsero,” a compelling collection of short stories published by Gadgad Press.
“Writing a book was my childhood dream,” Johannes says. “I wanted to walk into a bookstore and see my book on the shelf. It may not be the most lucrative career, but it is fulfilling for my soul. Not everyone gets to see their childhood dream come true. I consider myself ‘poor’ —yet very lucky.”
In an interview with Manila Bulletin Lifestyle, Johannes looks back on his journey as a writer, talks more about his book, and dives deep into the many acts of butchery.
First of all, what inspired you to become a writer?
