PC AND HER POLICE DOG HONOURED BY CHARITY

- By STAFF REPORTER

A police dog handler has received a special award for her commitment in the face of personal loss, professional tragedy and many setbacks.

Pc Leandra McCurry, 27, from Leicestershire Police, won the Special Recognition Award from the Thin Blue Paw Foundation, a charity that supports serving and retired police dogs.

Pc McCurry, from Loughborough, said being a police dog handler was her dream.

She said: “When I was in primary school, a suspect being chased by police ran through our playground and the dog and handler came searching for him.

“I remember standing at the door with my hands pressed against the window, watching; I didn’t want to take my eyes off them working.

“I'd always loved animals and grew up with German shepherds. I'd always been amazed by how skilled and talented police dogs are. Even now they amaze me every day.”

Pc McCurry and her five-year-old German shepherd PD Nico - were nominated by their sergeant, Joe Tully.

Sgt Tully said: “After facing multiple setbacks, Pc McCurry never lost sight of her goal.

“Her unwavering determination, resilience and courage have been nothing short of inspiring.
