MALIBU has issued only four rebuilding permits in the wake of the Palisades fire.

READING the Los Angeles Times recently, I felt a pang of embarrassment. Eight years after the 2017 Tubbs fire, which destroyed more than 4,600 structures in Santa Rosa, their community is 79% rebuilt, with 93% of its devastated Coffey Park neighborhood rebuilt — far faster recovery rates than other fire-affected areas in California.

Intrigued, I reached out to Santa Rosa City Councilman Jeff Okrepkie, a key figure in Santa Rosa’s recovery, with a simple request: “Tell me what you did.”
