Councillors welcome start of long-awaited roadworks

Llanelli Star

July 09, 2025

IMPROVEMENTS to alleviate traffic congestion on the A484 Sandy Road in Llanelli are starting this week - and local councillors are welcoming the much-needed work.

- IAN LEWIS Reporter

County councillors for the Hengoed Ward Martyn Palfreman and Edward Skinner say the work is vital for the area.

Sandy Road has been one of the most congested roads in Wales for several years.

Now, Carmarthenshire Council’s plan is finally going to tackle it, residents and community leaders hope.

As well as being frequently clogged with traffic, the area has also earned an unwelcome reputation as a collision hotspot.

The council work getting underway will aim to reduce traffic buildup and subsequent congestion, and improve road safety along the westbound carriageway of the A484 Sandy Road/Maes Y Coed junction.

It also aims to improve air quality and providing better access to Ysgol y Strade, Furnace School and Coleg Sir Gar by creating safer, more reliable routes for students, staff, and families.
