RESIDENTS HIT OUT OVER DANGERS AS STREET LIGHTS HAVE NOT WORKED FOR 11 MONTHS

- By JAMIE GREER ECHO Correspondent

PENSIONERS are scared to walk home as their street has been in darkness for 11 months.

Lynne Davies, 72, lives on Madeline McKenna Court, a cul-de-sac in Widnes. Her bungalow and the other properties on the street are managed by Your Housing, while the Madeline McKenna Care Home, on the same street, is run by Halton Council. Lynne says the street lighting has been faulty since she moved there five years ago but things hit a new low in January when the street lights went out completely.

Lynne told the ECHO last week (November 4) that this had led to residents falling and injuring themselves as they try to get home after the sun sets.

When the ECHO approached Halton Council, a spokesperson said contractors were due to arrive on Thursday or Friday of this week to address the problem. The council also apologised to the residents.

Lynne said: “The street lighting has never worked properly and since January we've had no proper street lights - just metal tubes with a great big round bulb on the top.
