A YOUNGSTER who saved his mother's life got the Christmas festivities under way in his home town.

Eight-year-old Jacob Varley-Issitt was declared the winner of this year’s Light up Loughborough competition run by Charnwood Borough Council.

He switched on the town’s Christmas lights last Friday - following in the footsteps of his dad, Chris, who did the honours as a four-year-old in 1988.

Jacob saved mum Hollie’s life after she collapsed from sepsis shock.

The collapse, the most severe complication of sepsis, came out of nowhere and saw Jacob rush to his mum's aid.
