RACE AGAINST TIME: Bagworth & District Working Men's Club

- By SAM KALANTZIS

Soaring energy bills put historic club's future in doubt

A CENTURY-OLD working men’s club is facing potential closure due to its “skyrocketing” energy bills.

Bagworth & District Working Men’s Club has been a community fixture since it was founded in 1919 by coal miners.

But it now faces a race against time to raise the cash to become more energy-efficient.

Vice-chairman Craig Freeman said: “Our electricity bills have almost tripled, and, as a nonprofit community hub, every penny we have is currently going just to keep the lights on.

“We are at a crossroads: we either modernise, or we close our doors forever.”
