PARISH councils are being encouraged to take over the management of selected roadside verges.

The Urban Verges Wildlife Scheme gives councils across Leicestershire the opportunity to improve the green spaces, to encourage wildlife to thrive.

The scheme, run by Leicestershire County Council with national wildlife recording charity NatureSpot, has been operating since 2019 and already involves 60 parish councils, and 80 individual verges.

The call has gone out for new parishes to get involved, or for existing members of the scheme to increase the numbers of verges they look after.

Councillor Adam Tilbury, lead for environment and flooding, said: “Our Urban Verges Wildlife Scheme is a fantastic way to bring nature back into our communities.
