Prize book reunited with family after 110 years

A CHANCE discovery in an old church led to a book given as a prize to a Leek girl 110 years ago being reunited with a family member.

Leek councillor Bill Cawley was foraging among a stack of old leather-bound books in a Chester Church when he stumbled on a French dictionary given as a prize to 16-year-old Gladys Bagnall at Leek High School, in July 1915, for her schoolwork.
Councillor Cawley said: “It was pure luck that I discovered the book. It is an illustrated dictionary published in Paris in 1901. Certain words we take for granted are absent.
