Dorking Rotary celebrates 95 years of service!
Incorporated in 1930, the Rotary Club of Dorking celebrated its 95th Birthday at its last Business Meeting of the Rotary Year on Tuesday, June 17. Fundraisers over the last year included their annual Quiz Night, running the Okewood Hill Dog Show, and the Christmas street collection in Dorking, and the club decided that now they should be distributing the monies collected.
A number of charities were chosen to benefit from the Club's Charity Account - namely the Royal Surrey Guildford Cancer Appeal; the Prostate Project, St Catherine's Hospice; and closer to home organisations that they have had regular connections with over the years - PSDS (Providing Support for individuals with Down Syndrome), The Brigitte Trust, the Patchworking Garden Project, and ALDAG. In addition, the Club will fund a Shelter Box, a Rotary-connected charity providing immediate aid for victims of disasters, worldwide.
Those present at the meeting also celebrated the club's birthday in true fashion with a chocolate cake complete with candles... although apparently the '5' got lost in transit!
Leatherhead Rotary Garden Party
Meanwhile, just up the road, Leatherhead Rotary Club were also celebrating the transition from one Rotary year to the next (July 1 to June 30) with their annual Garden Party, this year very kindly hosted by David and Barbara Slater.
Over 30 members, partners and friends of the club were present throughout the afternoon, which also included the traditional 'Presidential Handover' from outgoing Club President, Michelle Rosen, to incoming President, Arthee Gunness.
