Recent news that the Harris Museum, Library & Art Gallery which closed in October 2021, for the 'Harris Your Place' refurbishment project, is to reopen in late September 2025 will be welcomed by Preston folk

- writes Keith Johnson.

After four quiet years, the Harris is set to remind folk of past glories

The building had rarely closed, apart from the Covid lockdowns. Even during the dark days of the Second World War the Harris remained open although most of the valuable paintings and artefacts were removed for safe keeping and the top floor cleared of exhibits.

In Preston we have often taken for granted the ability to wander and wonder amongst the collections and exhibitions of art work and memorabilia. Despite the days of recessions and lockdowns the Harris has continued to progress in its endeavours to make it one of the top galleries in the country, much to the pleasure of Preston folk.

The iconic building in the city square has been a great source of local pride ever since it was officially opened in late October 1893. At the time it was said that as the town's noblest and stateliest structure it would perpetuate the memory of the Harris family whose legacy had made it possible.
