MP calls on Government to be open over Mandelson scandal

EAST Thanet MP Polly Billington was part of a powerful group of Labour backbenchers which successfully pressured the Government for high-level parliamentary scrutiny into the appointment of Lord Peter Mandelson as the UK's ambassador to the United States.

Following a dramatic week in Westminster, the Government has backed down on its initial refusal to involve the Intelligence and Security Committee (ISC).
The move follows a "humble address" motion - a rare and binding parliamentary device - to release government papers regarding the vetting of Lord Mandelson and his ties to the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.
The pressure on the Prime Minister intensified over the weekend, resulting in the resignation of Sir Keir Starmer's Chief of Staff on Sunday.
