Government grant boosts food rescuers

SE KITCHEN AIMS TO WORK WITH FARMERS IN FIGHT AGAINST WASTE

THE team behind SE Kitchen in Ramsgate has been awarded a grant by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to tackle food waste and support families in Thanet facing food insecurity.

The funding for Social Enterprise Kent (SEK) comes from the Government’s Tackling Food Surplus at the Farm Gate scheme and will help launch a new programme that rescues surplus produce from Kent farms and redistributes it to those in need.

The project builds on the traditional practice of gleaning - collecting unharvested or “imperfect” crops that would otherwise be wasted.

SEK plans to establish relationships with at least 20 local farms, expand volunteer gleaning activities, and integrate more produce into its kitchen sites.
