Pressure on Jordan after erratic performances as Trafford waits for his shot

- FROM JOHN CROSS Chief Football Writer in New York

FIGHT TO BE TOP PICK

JORDAN PICKFORD went into this tournament as England's undisputed No.1.

But it remains to be seen whether the 32-year-old will finish the World Cup with that status still intact.

Pickford has a serious potential challenger in James Trafford (right), which is putting the Everton goalkeeper's performances in North America under the spotlight.

There is a familiar saying in England circles that Pickford never lets his country down - and that has been largely the case.

But his performances in this tournament have been more erratic than usual, particularly when it comes to playing out from the back.

And the worry, as the Three Lions prepare to go into the knockout stages, is whether Pickford will get exposed against the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Co.

That is the level at which every small mistake is ruthlessly punished and even the slightest flap, error or poor pass will be seized upon.

Pickford has enjoyed a terrific season overall for Everton but — despite making brilliant saves and man-of-the-match displays - it was his mistake at Arsenal in March which gifted the newly-crowned champions a late goal and effectively three points.
