Ministers feared resistance would stall vaccine take-up

TAOISEACH Micheal Martin has admitted the Government had a "fear" people would resist vaccines during the pandemic.

Speaking to reporters in Washington DC last week, he added he has “regular concerns" about the inoculation uptake for such diseases as MMR.

Last week marked five years since Ireland's first lockdown of the Covid-19 crisis.

The first set of restrictions were announced by then-Taoiseach Leo Varadkar in Washington DC during the St Patrick's Day visit in 2020.

Speaking in the US capital five years later, Mr Martin said the Covid inquiry is now underway.

He added: “I hope it can be expedited with a view to evaluating what do we take from it to enable us to be better prepared into the future.”
