Switzerland is perfect spot to get your sporting fix

- BY MARK McCADDEN

THE DUST has settled after a hugely successful hosting of the 2025 UEFA Women's European Championships, and skiing season is still months away.

But there are still plenty of opportunities between now and then to get your sporting fix in Switzerland.

The country, famous for its slopes, chocolate and watches, has once again shown itself to be the perfect location for a major sporting event.

Euro 2025 obliterated previous attendance records at a Women’s European Championships, with 657,291 fans skipping through the turnstiles in host cities Basel, Bern, Geneva, Zurich, St Gallen, Lucern, Thun and Sion between July 2 and 27.

That was almost 100,000 more than attended the 2022 edition in England, when Sarina Wiegman's Lionesses roared to the first of back-to-back tournament successes.

Just before the Euros began, we paid a visit to two of the host cities - Geneva and Zurich, and stopped off in Lausanne, to sample some of Switzerland's sporting culture.

And it’s a fascinating destination for anyone with an interest not just in the live event festivities that we saw this summer, but in the history of some of the biggest sporting spectacles in the world.
