Progress since Paris but just not enough of it

WHEN TDs from the Dail’s Committee on Climate, Environment and Energy met yesterday to review last winter’s Storm Eowyn, their focus may have been elsewhere.

Any discussion on whether Ireland is prepared for future extreme weather depends on negotiations 7,000km away in the Brazilian Amazon.

Delegates at the Cop30 climate summit are reviewing progress 10 years on from the Paris Climate Accord, which aimed to limit global warming to 1.5C.

Earth's warming climate has accelerated faster than society has been able to move away from burning fossil fuels.

“There's been progress, but the lack of enough of it will be a big focus as diplomats gather in Belem” said Johan Rockstrom, director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Research in Germany.
