DOG owners are being warned about the dangers of their pets eating chocolate as Easter approaches.

The warning comes as a survey found half of owners admitted their pooch has eaten chocolate at some time.

Dogs Trust Ireland's poll found that despite chocolate being poisonous to canines, only a third of owners knew to contact their vet after discovering their pup had eaten it.

Some 88% of respondents said their dog had stolen food they shouldn't, while half of them admitted their pet had eaten chocolate.

This is despite many people now knowing chocolate is toxic for dogs - and worse still, 30% did not contact their vet.
