ONE of Meath’s most historic clubs is on the verge of a return to senior football after decades in the wilderness.

- BY PAT NOLAN

The tiny community of Kilbride, tight to the border “with Dublin, is represented in tomorrow’s intermediate final against Castletown, and a win would restore them to senior ranks for the first time since 1978.

The men in the famous green and red hoops enjoyed a comprehensive 3-26 to 0-13 victory over St Michael's in the semifinal, with the outstandin, Conor McWeeney notching 2-6.

It’s only two years since they came up from junior under former Meath star Anthony Moyles, having tumbled down the grades following their golden era of the 1960s and early 70s.

In a trajectory similar to the one they are currently on, Kilbride won the junior title in 1960 and the intermediate crown two years later.

They became senior champions for the first time in 1964, starting a run of five titles in eight seasons, including three-in-a-row from 1969-71.
