OPPOSITION parties have said an apology to the survivors of Ireland's industrial schools needs to be a tuning point in how the State treats victims.

Social Democrats education spokesperson Jen Cummins called it "shameful" that it took a hunger strike to extract a State apology from the Government.
Deputy Cummins said: "While it is welcome that the Taoiseach has agreed to make a formal apology in the Dail, this is the very least that survivors of systematic institutional abuse deserve.
