One Nation One Election proposal isn’t representative — it’s insincere

On December 12, the Union Cabinet approved a con-troversial proposal to implement simultaneous elections across India, involving all three tiers of elections, namely, the Lok Sabha, State Legislative Assemblies, and local bod-ies.

This is in pursuance of the recommendations of a high-level committee chaired by former President Ram Nath Kovind, which submitted its report on the “One Nation, One Election” plan this September. It is noteworthy that the com-mittee was not given the freedom to study the pros and cons of simultaneous elections but to suggest legislative and administrative measures required to implement it.
