The neighbouring Playhouse Theatre was built in the Tudor revival style in 1935. This replaces another cinema which had been standing on the site since 1896.

In the mid-1980s, the buildings were taken over by the Natal Performing Arts Council and were restored and converted into a multi-purpose arts centre with five venues. Architects Small & Pettit & Robson received awards for their work
