Explore new outdoor careers as a National Trust apprentice
-
LOOKING after the National Trust's outdoor places in the North East and Yorkshire takes love and care and a great deal of expertise and skill.
The Trust's apprenticeship programme gives people the opportunity to develop skills like these on a work-based accredited training programme a great opportunity for school leavers.
Apprentices work for the conservation charity, alongside college-based learning, gaining a qualification while working in picturesque locations with experienced staff.
OSCAR'S STORY
Oscar grew up in Derwentside, near Gibside, and loves working outdoors, close to nature. “Whenever I’m down in the woods I'm the happiest I can be,’ he said.
Oscar, 26, joined a week-long course last summer, which was designed in collaboration with both the National Trust and The King’s Trust to give young people an insight into life as an Assistant Ranger at Gibside, whilst developing their skills and confidence.
Through that, he found out about the National Trust’s Level 2 Assistant Ranger Apprentice roles, funded by HSBC UK - exactly the opportunity he’d been looking for.
“I'd been wanting to get involved in the National Trust for a long time’ he said. “I had just graduated from studying a Level 5 Diploma in Web Development and struggled for months to find local work in that field. I didn’t want to move away from the countryside and was falling out of love with computing. I wanted to do something outdoors.”
