Ms Reeves was simply acknowledging what British businesses already do.Any UK firm exporting to the European Union must comply with EU regulations. Brexit hasn't changed this. British car manufacturers must meet EU emissions standards to sell in Europe; UK food exporters meet EU food safety rules; British manufacturers comply with EU product standards.

Before Brexit, these businesses followed EU rules and enjoyed friction-free, cost-effective market access. After Brexit, they follow the same EU rules but now face customs checks, extensive “rule of origin” paperwork, and costly border delays. Do they benefit from this? No.
