A thumping victory as Luke Campbell is elected the first mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire

LUKE Campbell has thanked the people of Hull and East Yorkshire for electing him as the region's first mayor of its new combined authority and has urged those who did not vote for him to “give me a chance”.

The former boxer and Olympic gold medallist stood for Reform UK and won the hearts of the local population, amassing more than 35 per cent of the vote. Mr Campbell received almost 11,000 more votes than second-placed candidate Mike Ross, the Liberal Democrat leader of Hull City Council.

When the result was declared at Haltemprice Leisure Centre, Mr Campbell said he was “humbled and honoured”, and pledged to “put the people first in this region”, adding: “That commitment starts now, I promise I will not let you down”.
