At four, Mario Zagallo has one more World Cup trophy than Pele. And since he was 10 years senior, for Zagallo it was never a case of having played with Pele but the other way round. The most durable symbol of Brazil's supremacy in football, Zagallo, as per a post on his official Instagram account on Saturday, has died aged 92.

Diminutive but a tough and talented left winger, he was the last surviving member of the 1958 squad that won the World Cup; Zagallo netting a goal and helping Pele score another in the final. The victory provided some salve to a nation still hurting from the loss to Uruguay eight years ago. The redemption was personal too for Zagallo was at the Maracana in 1950.
"I'll never forget the silence, the sadness and the disappointment of that defeat," he said.
In 1962, Zagallo played every minute of a campaign that, headlined by the magic of Garrincha, took in its stride Pele's injury to retain the World Cup.
