NIA takes over 3 cases amid fresh violence

The National Investigation Agency has taken over the probe into the fresh wave of violence that has hit Manipur since last week, including the November 7 murder of a Hmar woman in Jiribam and the November 11 attack on a CRPF post in the district, following directions from the ministry of home affairs, people familiar with the matter said on Monday.

The federal agency has registered three first information report (FIRs), in cases previously investigated by Manipur police, and has asked its team to unearth the larger conspiracy behind these incidents, the people cited above said.

The cases handed over to NIA include the murder of a Hmar woman in Jiribam district on November 7 at her residence by armed miscreants. The incident led to further violence in which six members of a Meitei family from the same village - three women and three children - were reported missing, with officials saying that they were likely abducted.
